Individual therapy consists of 50-minute, one-on-one sessions that help you work toward your therapeutic goals. I meet with most clients once a week. During our time together, I will ask questions, provide education, and teach you skills. We usually practice these skills in sessions, and you are encouraged to continue using them between sessions.
Interested in more details? While each session is tailored to the needs of the client, here’s a general step-by-step overview of how individual therapy works:
1. First and foremost, I provide a space of acceptance and validation. I know it can be really hard to open up to a random person, so we will spend as much time as you need getting comfortable.
2. Together, we identify some of the behaviors or patterns that you are hoping to change.
3. You will learn skills, and we will practice them in session.
4. We will get really clear on your values and the actions that you can take to build the life you WANT to live.
5. Over the course of our sessions, we will process areas where you struggle to implement skills or take valued actions. We will problem-solve and troubleshoot so that you are better able to navigate future challenges.
6. Our week is complete when we have determined that you have developed the skills you need to live the life you WANT to like.
